Video streaming company Netflix has introduced unlimited maternity and paternity leave for its staff based in America. The firm said that employees would be allowed to take off as much time as they want during the first year after a child is born or an adoption.
It has been hailed as particularly generous as in the US women are only entitled to 12 weeks of statutory maternity leave and it is unpaid. In a Netflix blog Tawni Cranz, chief talent officer, said: “We want employees to have the flexibility and confidence to balance the needs of their growing families without worrying about work or finances.
“Parents can return part-time, full-time, or return and then go back out as needed. We’ll just keep paying them normally, eliminating the headache of switching to state or disability pay. Each employee gets to figure out what’s best for them and their family, and then works with their managers for coverage during their absences.”
She said that the businesses ongoing success depended on attracting and retaining the most talented people in their field.
“Experience shows people perform better at work when they’re not worrying about home. This new policy, combined with our unlimited time off, allows employees to be supported during the changes in their lives and return to work more focused and dedicated,” she said.
Other US firms based in Silicon Valley, such as Uber and Reddit offer the same benefit. While earlier this year, Richard Branson’s firm Virgin Management announced it would give employees who make use of shared parental leave up to 100 per cent of their salary over 52 weeks regardless of gender.
